New Delhi: A couple performed the ‘puberty function’ for their 21-year-old trans daughter Nisha at Virudhachalam of Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu.
Born as Nishant, she lived with some transgender people after her parents denounced her a few years back. However, her parents had a change of heart and accepted Nisha in their house.
Her parents, Kolanchi, who works at a sales hall and Amutha, who works as a sanitation worker, changed her name from Nishant to Nisha and performed all the rituals to mark her puberty ceremony. The event was attended my many, including her family members, relatives, neighbours and school friends who studied with her.
“I am blessed to have such parents and relatives who understood and respected my changes and feelings. I request all the parents out there to equally respect their children’s desire,” a News18 report quoted Nisha as saying.
Several people who attended the puberty ceremony said that this is a welcome move and that this event would definitely bring about a change in the society. Expressing happiness over the acceptance of a transgender with a ceremony for the first time, they said that it is very rare that parents come to terms with this issue and honour them in such a way.
Earlier, a transwoman in Chennai was able to gain acceptance through a Facebook post. Shaina Banu, who runs an eatery named ‘Transgender Tasty Hut’ near Chennai Egmore, had very little customers initially. However, her restaurant witnessed a massive increase in customer count once her social media post went viral. She wrote, “If an eatery has been run by men or women, this society would give a visit. But will you people come to an eatery that is run by a transwoman? Then why does this society blame us in a context that we people don’t earn by hard work?”
As the post went viral, many YouTubers and activists made her eatery popular that increased the customer count.
