Tamil Nadu police arrested S Selvakumar, state vice president of the Industrial cell of BJP, for allegedly tweeting against 'public transquility'. The tweets were posted by Selvakumar between April 6 and 11.
According to IANS, the police initiated the action based on the complaint of one RK Suresh Kumar of Ganapathipudur in Coimbatore on Tuesday.
The police booked Selvakumar under Sections 505 (1)(b) (with the intent to cause or which is likely to cause fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit a crime against the state or against Public tranquility) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66 (computer-related offenses) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000, said the report.
A team of police led by Inspector PA Arun arrested the accused on Tuesday.
Following the arrest, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai condemned the action taken against Selvakumar.
Taking to Twitter, Annamalai on Thursday said, "I strongly condemn the @arivalayam government for arresting Mr.@Selvakumar_IN the state vice president of the Tamil Nadu BJP industrial cell. By arresting those who speak out against the wrongdoings of the ruling party the incompetent DMK government dreams of suppressing voices against the ruling party and stifling freedom of expression. @BJP4Tamilnadu volunteers are not afraid of this action."

Meanwhile, 200 BJP workers led by Pollachi town president Kumaraguru staged a hunger protest against the arrest of Selvakumar. Based on the information, the police reached the spot and detained 150 protesters at a marriage hall. Later, they were released within a few hours.
