A BJP worker was booked on Friday for questioning a hijab-clad woman doctor over not wearing a white coat at a primary health centre (PHC) in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. A video of the incident showing the BJP functionary questioning the credentials of the doctor has also gone viral. 


According to a report on PTI, the police said that they have registered three cases against BJP functionary Bhuvaneswar Ram, who hails from Thirupoondi in the district. The case was booked for picking up a quarrel with a woman doctor for wearing hijab and not donning the white coat. He was also seen questioning the credentials of the woman doctor in a video that went viral. The incident reportedly took place at Thirupoondi primary health centre on May 24 night.


In the video as per PTI, he could be heard asking the doctor, "I doubt if you are really a doctor. Why are you not in uniform, why are you wearing a hijab?" 


The doctor was also reportedly heard saying that this was wrong since they were taking a video of a woman doctor without her permission.


The BJP worker had taken one Subramanian who complained of discomfort to the PHC for treatment but when he saw the night duty doctor clad in hijab, he started quarreling with her, police said.

Based on a complaint, the police booked the accused under various sections including Sections  353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 298 (uttering, words, etc., with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person.) of Indian Penal Code, said a report on The Hindu. 


The incident has also taken place just as doctor Vandana Das was murdered by a patient in Kerala.
