Two people died in an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing factory at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district on Tuesday. Virudhunagar police told ANI, “Two people died in an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing factory at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district.”


Based on a tip-off, the police reached the spot and started the investigation. A case is likely to be soon registered and further investigations are on.

Earlier, an explosion took place at the matchbox manufacturing at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district on Monday. 


Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district is the firecracker capital of South India. The industry employs over 8 lakh workers. The factories contribute to an annual turnover of Rs 6,000 crore.


Meanwhile, one person died and nine others were injured after an explosion at a restaurant in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district. 


National Bomb Data Centre inspected the restaurant and collected the evidence on Sunday. 


The police said, an explosion occurred at an eatery in Middle Bazar in Shimla on July 18, 2023. In the incident, one person died and 10-12 persons were injured.


The police said: "NBDC team comprising of 14 men and 2 officers inspected the spot on July 23, 2023 and collected evidence from the scene of the incident. They also examined the evidence collected by the aforementioned SIT."


The NBDC team also met and spoke with the injured persons in the hospital. 


In March, nine persons died and several others suffered injuries after a major fire broke out at a firecracker unit in Kuruvi hills in Kanchipuram. The fire also spread to the godown near the explosion site and created a major mishap.
