Chennai: The Ullal police arrested a 26-year-old man for allegedly entering a room used by women and flashing his private parts while the women were offering prayers at Huda Jumma Masjid in Thokkottu, on the outskirts of Mangaluru.


The Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said, the arrested man was identified as Sujith Shetty (26), son of Udaya in Karkala, as per a report on Deccan Herald.


He also said the arrested person was behaving with the women who were offering namaz at the masjid. 


The issue came to light after the two women gave a complaint to the police.

Based on the complaint, the police booked the accused under sections Section 448 (trespass), 295 A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 354 (Whoever assaults or uses criminal force to any woman), 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of Indian Penal Code.


The incident immediately after the hijab row has created tension among the people.


The hijab row started in January 2022 after an education institution stopped students wearing hijab from entering the campus. The issue soon snowballed and the BJP-led government also took a stand in favour of the schools.

There were also several violent protests and some of the students moved to Karnataka HC. However, the Court said that wearing hijab was not an essential religious practice. Following this, the petitioners decided to move SC. 


Yet, Karnataka government refused to permit school students wearing hijab from attending the board exams and as a result many Muslim girl students skipped Class 10 and 12 board exams.
