Chennai: Tamil Nadu Commission for Protection of Child Rights on Thursday said that the hostel in which a Class 12 student mysteriously died in Kallakurichi did not have a license. They also said the hostel was not registered under the Hostels Act.


After inspecting the hostel on Thursday, Saranya Jayakumar of Tamil Nadu Commission for Protection of Child Rights said, “I conducted a detailed inquiry. The hostel didn't have a license, wasn't registered under Hostels Act. We've been told that some 24 girls & 83 boys were lodged there.”

“Any pvt hostel has to be registered under Hostels Act in Tamil Nadu. It's a warning. All schools, colleges & pvt hostels must apply for a license under the Act, and get it approved by Dist Magistrate,” she said.

The case pertains to the death of a Class 12 student under mysterious circumstances at a hostel of a private school in Chinnasalem of Kallakurichi. While the school alleged the girl died by suicide, the family alleged a foul play and demanded a CBI inquiry. After the death came to light, the school faced arson attacks and suffered damage.

The mob attack reportedly led to an approximate loss of around Rs 10 crore to the private school, said a report on IANS.
