New Delhi: Heavy rain lashed several areas of Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi and Manjolai districts on Sunday amid rainfall predictions by the India Meteorological Department.
IMD on Sunday forecast heavy rains over Tamil Nadu during the next 2-3 days.
In a video shared by the news agency ANI, severe waterlogging was witnessed in the Tirunelveli region of Tamil Nadu. In the video, people were seen wading through the waterlogged streets as rainfall continued.
Trees were uprooted and vehicles damaged in Thoothukudi following heavy rainfall and strong winds. Thoothukudi District Collector declared a holiday for schools and colleges tomorrow, December 18, due to heavy rainfall, as per ANI.
Railway subway was waterlogged in Kovilpatti as heavy rainfall continued in the area.
According to IMD, a cyclonic circulation that was over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal off the south Sri Lanka coast now lies over the Comorin area and neighbourhood.
Due to this meteorological condition, isolated heavy rainfall has been predicted over some districts of Tamil Nadu till December 19.
On 17 December, IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places over Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Karaikal area while heavy rain at one or two places over Villupuram, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Preambular, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Karur, Theni, Dindigul districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
In a video shared by PTI, Tamil Nadu minister Mano Thangaraj was seen reviewing the preparedness in Kanyakumari amid heavy rainfall in the region.
On Monday, the weather department predicted light to moderate rain at many places over South Tamil Nadu, and one or two places over North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts of Tamil Nadu.
On Tuesday, light to moderate rain at a few places in South Tamil Nadu, at one or two places over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with thunderstorms and lightning at one or two places, is likely to occur.
