Four persons died in a mishap while manufacturing country-made explosives in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The workers from the area were engaged in making firecrackers as Diwali is around the corner, reported ANI. The police said, the workers were making firecrackers when the explosives suddenly started to blast with a loud noise.
Four workers died on the spot in the mishap. Later, the police who arrived at the spot were unable to identify the bodies.
Nagapattinam District SP Harish Singh said that there were eight people inside the factory at the time of the mishap. The four others suffered injuries and were taken to Nagapattinam Government Hospital for treatment.
"The firecracker factory got a license for the years 2023 to 2026. However, while they were mixing explosive powders this incident might have occurred. We are investing it," he said, as per the report.
The SP said that the manufacturer started the factory in 2008. He said, "We have filed a case and arrested a person. We are investigating the case and serious action will be taken against the accused."
This is not the first time mishaps have been reported while manufacturing firecrackers. Two days ago, three people were injured in an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing factory in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district on Tuesday. The Fire Department said the wounded have been admitted to Sivakasi Government Hospital for treatment.
In July, two persons died after an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing factory at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district. Based on the information, the police registered a case and started the investigation.
In the same month, another explosion took place at a matchbox manufacturing unit at Sivakasi.
The capital of South India's firecracker industry is Sivakasi in the Virudhunagar district. More than 8 lakh people are employed in the sector and the factories aid Rs 6,000 crore annual turnover.
