Coimbatore Deputy Inspector General of Police Vijayakumar allegedly died by suicide using a pistol borrowed from a gunman at his residence on Friday. The police have started the investigation into the case but the reason for the suicide is yet to be ascertained. 


According to ANI, "Coimbatore Range DIG Vijayakumar died allegedly by suicide at his residence this morning. In preliminary enquiry, it is reported that he died by suicide by getting his gunman's gun."

At 6.15 AM on Friday, DIG Vijayakumar allegedly shot himself in Red Fields near Race Course. 
The police, as per India Today, said Vijayakumar shot himself dead using a pistol borrowed from a gunman. The gunman was deployed at his official residence on duty. 


After security personnel heard a gunshot, they immediately alerted senior officers. The police then sent the body for autopsy to Coimbatore Medical College hospital. 


Vijayakumar was a 2009-batch IPS officer. He worked as a Superintendent of Police in places including Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur. He has also served as Deputy Commissioner of Police Anna Nagar before becoming DIG, Coimbatore range. He became DIG in January 2023.


Taking to social media, Tamil Nadu CM said, “I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear the sad news of the untimely death of DIG Vijayakumar.” 


“DIG Vijayakumar served in various posts including Superintendent of Police during his tenure. His death is a disaster for the Tamil Nadu Police Department. My deepest condolences and condolences to his family and friends from the police force,” he said.
