Chennai: A man who was picked up for investigation reportedly died at Kilpauk GMCH in Chennai. However, the police said that it was not a case of custodial torture.


The man, Akash of Ayanavaram, was also reportedly part of a 12-member gang that was involved in creating ruckus in the neighbouring areas. On September 21, Akash was picked up by Otteri police for investigation in connection with a case for damaging a car at Otteri in Chennai Central. 


The police claimed that they sent Akash to his home on the same day since he was inebriated. However, Akash was admitted to Kilpauk Government Medical College Hospital on the same day after he developed health issues. 


However, Akash succumbed on Thursday. Following this, the family members alleged that Akash died since he was manhandled by the police.

Meanwhile, on April 19, 2022, Vignesh who was picked up by the police died in the custody of Secretariat Colony police station. His post-mortem revealed that Vignesh sustained 13 injuries on his body. A CCTV footage also showed police running behind the deceased. 


The case was then transferred to CB-CID for investigation. The CB-CID also arrested five police personnel and home guard for the murder of the man.

Meanwhile, the death of a father-son duo in Sathankulam police station made headlines and created a controversy. Jeyaraj and Bennix died in the custody of Thoothukudi police. The police first picked up Jeyaraj for keeping their mobile accessories shop open beyond the permission hour. Later, Bennix followed them.

However, reports said that they were brutally attacked and assaulted while in custody following which the two of them suffered a heart attack in a gap of within a few hours in Kovilpatti General Hospital. The death led to an outrage in Tamil Nadu.
