Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation has started to reduce the number of Fever Survey Workers (FSWs) as COVID-19 cases are reducing in many zones of the city. The FSWs are responsible for conducting door-to-door surveys to collect information on residents having fever, flu or any other illness. If the people start to show symptoms of COVID-19 infection, the volunteers will also help them take tests. 


According to a report in IANS, the workers were paid Rs 391 per day. However, the Corporation has decided to reduce the number of workers from 60 per cent to 30 per cent since the COVID-19 cases have declined in several wards of North Chennai. The number of workers in North Chennai including the Tiruvottiyur zone were reduced as per the requirement. However, the contract of the workers has been extended till September in Adyar where the COVID-19 cases continue on an upward curve.

According to the data released by Greater Chennai Corporation, five zones out of the 16 zones of Chennai Corporation have started recording less than 100 active cases a day. The five wards include Tiruvottiyur with 38 cases, Manali with 32 cases, Madhavaram with 90 cases, Royapuram with 69 cases and Sholinganallur with 63 active novel coronavirus cases. The other wards with 100 or more than 100 cases are Tondiarpet (100), Thiru Vi Ka Nagar (104), Ambattur (114), Anna Nagar (178), Teynampet (160), Kodambakkam (183), Valarasavakkam (156), Alandur (192), Adyar (164) and Perungudi (122).


 Meanwhile,  Tamil Nadu government has extended the lockdown till September 15. In order to reduce people congregation, the government said that all religious places will remain closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays while beaches will remain closed for public entry on Sundays.
