Cauvery Water Dispute: Karnataka Convinced Supreme Court On State's Grim Situation, Says Dy CM Shivakumar

Shivakumar said that they convinced the Supreme Court of the fact that Tamil Nadu has used 93 TMC water which is more than it should have used in difficult times. 

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that the representatives convinced Supreme Court of the situation in the state related to sharing Cauvery water with neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The Deputy CM said that during Cauvery Water Management Authority meeting held recently Tamil Nadu insisted that Karnataka should release 24,000 cusecs of water but the situation in the state was appraised to Apex Court. 

Shivakumar also said that they convinced the Supreme Court of the fact that Tamil Nadu used 93 TMC water which is more than it should have used in difficult times. 

According to ANI, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, "When the Cauvery water management authority (CWMA) meeting was held regarding the Cauvery issue, they insisted that 24 thousand cusecs should be released. We argued that we cannot release 24 thousand cusecs of water."

"They ordered that 5 thousand cusecs should be released. We said that we will release 3 thousand cusecs. Now we have again convinced the Supreme Court of the situation in Karnataka," he said. 

The Deputy CM said that the state earlier left it to them to release water. However, now he said that the farmers should be protected so they have decided to present their arguments before both committees.

Further, DK Shivakumar said that the rainfall received in Cauvery basin was inadequate this year. 

Earlier, Tamil Nadu had approached the Apex Court seeking to direct Karnataka to release 24,000 cusecs of water daily per day from the reservoirs. Later, Karnataka filed an affidavit opposing Tamil Nadu's request.
