According to PTI, more than 40,000 shops remained closed in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district as a sign of protest over Cauvery water dispute on Wednesday. The full blockade protest is being held on behalf of the Cauvery Basin Protection Coalition against the Karnataka government for refusing to provide Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu and the central government for not providing water.

The move also comes after Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously moved a resolution directing the Karnataka government to release Cauvery water in accordance with directives from the Cauvery Water Management Authority.

Earlier in the day, Stalin said, "In order to protect the livelihood of farmers in the delta region of Tamil Nadu, the House unanimously urges the Union government to direct the Karnataka government to release water to Tamil Nadu," as quoted by the news agency PTI.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have been embroiled in a protracted conflict concerning the distribution of water from the Cauvery river.
