Chennai: A woman died after a building that was being razed down near Gemini bridge in Chennai collapsed and fell her on Friday. Another woman who was also walking on the pavement near the building at the same time also suffered injuries. 


The incident took place on the road towards Greams Road and Anna Salai.


According to ABP Nadu, works had been carried out for over a week to demolish an old dilapidated building on Anna Salai. In a similar manner, the works were also carried out to raze down the building on Friday. While the workers were razing down a portion of the building using a JCB, the wall suddenly collapsed and fell on the people who were walking near the pavement. 


In the impact, two people got stuck in the debris. The police immediately rushed for help and pulled out both the women. However, a woman who was a banker died on the way to the hospital.


The banker has been identified as Priya.

Another woman who suffered injuries had been admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Friday.


It may be noted that the works were carried out on a busy day without any signs or stoppage boards. The work should have also been carried out at night, said the commuters.


The mishap also affected traffic flow on the road for more than an hour. 


Meanwhile, it maybe recalled that a software engineer died while crossing a pothole on Anna Salai in Chennai in 2021. The youth hit a pothole while riding the two-wheeler, lost balance of the vehicle and fell under the wheels of MTC bus at Little Mount.
