Bharatiya Janata Party national president JP Nadda on Monday slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led government over a "horrific" video where a man brutally assaulted a couple in public. Nadda alleged that women were "unsafe in didi's West Bengal" and added that the Trinamool Congress cadre and MLAs were justifying the act.

"A horrific video has come to light from West Bengal, reminding of the brutalities that exist only in theocracies," said the Union minister in a post on X. "To make matters worse, the TMC cadre and MLAs are justifying the act.  Be it Sandeshkhali, Uttar Dinajpur or many other places, Didi’s West Bengal is UNSAFE for women," he added.

In the video, the man was seen beating up a couple with a bamboo stick following a kangaroo court decision. The man was allegedly a local TMC leader of Chopra in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district.

The accused, Tajmul alias JCB has been arrested and kept at Islampur police station and will be produced before the ACJM court on Monday.

"Chopra police arrested the person and for safety reasons, they kept him at Islampur police station," said Superintendent of Police Jobi Thomas, as per an ANI report.

While Chopra TMC MLA Hamidul Rahaman denied the party having any links with the accused, he said that the woman's activities were "unsocial".

“We condemn the incident. But the woman also did wrong. She left her husband, son, and daughter and became an evil beast. There is some code and justice according to Muslim Rashtra. However, we do agree that what happened was a bit extreme," said the TMC MLA while speaking to reporters, as per a Hindustan Times report.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also lashed out at TMC calling it out as "Talibani Mindset and Culture".

"TMC means Talibani Mindset and Culture. The entire country is shocked after seeing the brutal video of a Talibani-style, Kangaroo court justice being delivered in broad daylight on the streets of Bengal.

The BJP leader also attacked the TMC MLA saying Rahaman "has victim-shamed the victim and has even gone on and said that in a 'Muslim Rashtra' there are certain terms and conditions, thereby justifying this kind of barbaric act."

He also targeted the Congress leadership including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi for not speaking up on the issue.
