New Delhi: The Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Congress party is scheduled to meet today at 4 pm via video conferencing to select candidates for Uttarakhand assembly elections 2022.

Congress is yet to announce even its first list of candidates for the Uttarakhand assembly election 2022, despite the screening committee holding discussions for around a week.

The hill state will go for polls in a single phase on February 14 with the last date for nomination of candidates fixed for January 28.

Meanwhile, yesterday the BJP had released a list of 59 candidates for the upcoming polls. It was announced that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will contest the election from Khatima constituency, while former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat offered not to contest the polls. Whereas Vijay Rawat, brother of India's first CDS Gen Bipin Rawat who joined the party on Wedensday, is expected to feature in the next candidates list.

In the last Assembly elections held in 2017, the Bharatiya Janata Party registered victory in 57 out of 70 assembly seats.

Earlier on Wednesday, senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of the state, Harish Rawat said that any decision regarding taking Harak Singh Rawat back into the party will be of the party leadership.

"I am not angry with anyone. Congress' high command has to decide whether Harak Singh Rawat will be inducted into the party or not. I will accept whatever decision the Congress party takes. I am not in the capacity to decide whether Harak Singh Rawat should be inducted into the party or not," he said as reported by ANI.

Harak Singh Rawat along with 9 other MLAs had left the Congress in 2016 and joined BJP. Now again, with polls in the state less than a month away, he wants to join the Congress but Harish Rawat, chairman of the party's campaign committee for the polls, has not given out any clear indication on the same.
