A man from a Dalit community was allegedly beaten to death over what the police describe as an “illicit affair” with a married woman of the same village in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district. The incident took place in Jasaula village of the Khatauli area. The police claim that victim Ankit Kumar had a love affair with a woman (30-year-old) from a different caste than him, according to a report by news agency IANS.

On Monday, the victim was found in a semi-conscious state with his hands and feet tied, the report described. He was taken to the hospital, but his injuries were too brutal for him to survive.

According to Ankit’s family, he was abducted from his home by a man on Sunday.

Ankur Kumar, the victim’s brother stated, "He was beaten through the night and found with injuries all over the body at a nearby house on Monday. A muffler, which was used as a noose, was tied around his neck,” quoted IANS on Tuesday.

Khatauli Circle Officer Ravi Shanker told news agency PTI that police rushed to the spot after getting the information and shifted injured Ankit to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The body was sent for postmortem examination, PTI reported.

According to a police complaint by Ankit's family, the deceased was kept hostage since Sunday evening, the official told PTI.

The police detained the woman’s husband as the prime accused along with a few other locals from the village.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Khatauli, Ravi Shankar Mishra, told IANS, "A case was registered against 'unknown persons' under IPC section 302 (murder) and SC/ST Act. The body was sent for autopsy and the report is awaited. Initial probe revealed the crime took place over an illicit affair."
