New Delhi: A 34-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly was arrested for allegedly throwing acid on his former wife after she refused to do 'Halala' with his elder brother, police said on Wednesday. According to a report by news agency PTI, the man had given his wife triple talaq a month back and she had been living with her parents. The accused visited her house on Tuesday and forced her to do ‘Halala’ with his elder brother, and when she refused, the former threw acid on her, police said.

According to the report, Senior Superintendent of Police (Bareilly) Satyarth Anuruddha Pankaj, who visited the hospital where the victim has been admitted, said arrangements have been made for her proper treatment. The victim has suffered serious injuries on her face, police said.

The accused, Ishaq, had given his wife triple talaq a month back and since then had been forcing her and his elder brother for 'halala' to which both the parties refused, police said as reported by the woman in her complaint.

According to the victim, she hadn’t filed a case against triple talaq as she wanted to keep her family intact. However, her husband took it as her weakness and started forcing her to do ‘Halala’ with his elder brother, police added. The couple had got married 11 years back and has two daughters.

Halala is a practice where a woman, after being divorced by triple talaq, marries another man, consummates the marriage, and gets divorced again to be able to remarry her former husband.

According to the woman’s complaint, a fight broke out between her and her husband when their younger daughter fell ill and Ishaq, under the influence of alcohol, thrashed her and gave triple talaq, police said.

The accused has been arrested and sent to jail, police added.
