New Delhi: A worker from the Uttar Pradesh power corporation died by setting himself ablaze outside of an engineer who had allegedly asked him to “send his wife for a night,” police said on Monday.
As per an FIR filed with the police, Junior Engineer (JE) Nagendra Sharma had also asked lineman 42-year-old Gokul to pay him Rs 1 lakh for the transfer he is seeking.
According to a report by news agency PTI, the JE and another lineman, Jagatpal, have been suspended.
Gokul made a video leveling the allegations before taking the step on Saturday night at Hydle Colony in Pallia.
The FIR was filed by his wife Rajkumari. It is mentioned in the FIR that the JE demanded Rs 1 lakh and asked her husband to send her to him for a night if he wanted to Pallia.
According to PTI, Gokul was earlier posted at Manhgapur under the Pallia substation and transferred to Aliganj a few weeks ago.
Post the incident he was rushed to a hospital in Lakhimpur and later to Lucknow, where he took his last breath on Sunday.
The video he made leveling allegations on the JE surfaced on social media before his death.
The victim's wife in her complaint held the JE and Jagatpal responsible for the tragedy.
Taking cognisance of the video, District Magistrate Mahendra Bahadur Singh recommended the suspension of the JE and the lineman Jagatpal.
A departmental inquiry has been ordered in the case by a three-member panel. The panel will submit its report within a week for further action.
Superintendent of Police Sanjiv Suman said an FIR has been lodged against the junior engineer and the lineman.
He said that the video statement of the victim before his death and the departmental inquiry will be taken into account during the police probe.
