The police in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh have arrested a man for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl. The accused was a religious teacher at a local mosque, news agency Press Trust of India reported, quoting the police.


The arrest was made on a complaint lodged by the minor girl’s mother. According to the complaint, the girl was raped on Tuesday after she went to the mosque for her lessons, the report said. Accused Owais, who imparted religious teaching at the mosque, allegedly took the girl to his room near the mosque and raped her, the PTI report quoted Sambhal Superintendent of Police Chakresh Mishra as saying.


Acting on the complaint lodged by the girl’s mother, an FIR was registered on Wednesday under Sector 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the officer said.


The girl was sent to a hospital for her medical examination, and its report is awaited, the police added. 


12-Year-Old ‘Raped’ On Way To School In Noida


In a separate incident in UP, a 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 20-year-old man on Wednesday when she was on the way to her school in Noida. The accused has been arrested, PTI reported. 


According to the police, the accused had tried to escape and clashed with them after he was caught, the report said. He was taken into custody again but not before he sustained gunshot injuries as the police chased to catch him, it said.


“The girl was on her way to school in the morning when the accused met her and lured her to an isolated area in Sector 32 and forced himself on her,” a police officer was quoted as saying, adding that the accused had reportedly interacted with the girl a couple of times before.
An FIR has been registered under IPC Section 376 (rape) and the POCSO Act.
