New Delhi: Five police personnel have been booked for allegedly torturing a man in custody in the Budaun district of Uttar Pradesh. According to a PTI report, two unidentified people have been booked here harassing the man. The police had picked the man on charges of theft on May 2 and later allegedly tortured him in custody.
20-yr-old Rehan was held by the Uttar Pradesh police while he was returning home from work. The family members alleged that he was given electric shocks while he was under police custody, physically and mentally harassed, and was violated by the policemen.
The PTI report said that the accused assaulted Rehan brutally and inserted a wooden stick in his genitals. The matter came to light after the family lodged a complaint against the UP cops.
The family mentioned in their complaint that the accused took Rs 5,000 as a bribe for letting the man go. The incident took place at the Kakrala police outpost of the Alahapur police station area.
The family members alleged that Rehan's health began deteriorating after the incident. The family is getting him treated by a private doctor in Bulandshahr. The victim, who is a part-time vegetable vendor and has been suffering repeated seizures
On Wednesday, when his condition worsened, the family members complained about the matter to top officials.
While the PTI report mentions that Rehan was booked by the UP police on charges of theft, several media reports said that he was taken into custody under suspicion that he may have ties with a gangster booked on multiple occasions under charges of cow slaughter.
