New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Noida Airport at Jewar on Thursday, making poll-bound Uttar Pradesh the only state to have five international airports.
The state-of-the-art airport is expected to be completed in 2024. Besides boosting connectivity in Uttar Pradesh, the Noida airport will be the "logistics gateway of northern India", the PMO said in a statement.

How many airports are there in Uttar Pradesh?
Till 2021, Uttar Pradesh, the largest state in India, had only two international airports in the capital Lucknow and Varanasi. On October 20, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kushinagar airport. Another international airport under construction in Ayodhya is expected to become operational early next year.
Uttar Pradesh presently has eight operational airports and 13 airports and 7 airstrips are being developed.
When will operations start at Noida airport in Jewar?
Flight operations are expected to start at Noida International Airport in 2024. The first phase of the airport, spread over more than 1,300 hectares, will be able to handle around 1.2 crore passengers a year, the PMO said in a statement. There will be two runways initially.
Which regions will the airport benefit?
The Noida airport will be the second international airport to come up in the national capital region (NCR) and help decongest the overburdened IGI Airport in Delhi.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said it will benefit the people of cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Agra, Bulandshahr, Hapur and neighbouring areas. The airport is located 72 km from the IGI Airport in Delhim and 40 km from Noida.
What facilities will the Noida airport have?
For the first time, an airport in India will have an integrated multi-modal cargo hub. The dedicated cargo terminal will have an initial capacity of 20 lakh metric tonne and will be expanded to 80 lakh metric tonne.
A ground transportation centre will be developed featuring a multi-modal transit hub. It will house metro and high-speed rail stations, taxi and bus services. Noida and Delhi will be connected to the airport through metro.
All major highways like the Yamuna Expressway, Western Peripheral Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and others will also be connected to the airport.
People from Delhi can reach the airport in about 22 minutes as it will be connected to the planned Delhi-Varanasi High-Speed Rail.
The airport, being touted as "India's first net zero emissions airport", will also house a state-of-the-art MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhauling) service, the PMO statement said.
