New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to increase the retirement age of doctors by 5 years. The proposal for the same is being prepared. However, there are mixed reactions among doctors regarding the Chief Minister's decision. While some doctors are opposing it some have welcomed the decision.
The retirement age of doctors is currently 65 years. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to increase it by 5 years to 70 years. The decline in the number of doctors during the corona period is considered to be the major reason behind the Chief Minister's decision. It is also being said that as the retirement age of doctors increases, the maximum benefit of their experience can be taken.
However, even before the implementation of this decision of the government, controversies have started. The Faculty Forum of Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Post Graduate Medical Sciences, Lucknow has opposed the Chief Minister's decision. Forum members say that as soon as they get older, a variety of physical and mental problems begin. Older doctors will not be able to treat patients well. This will only harm patients rather than benefit them.
Moreover, if this decision is implemented, the faculty member seats for new students will not be increased, due to which new doctors will not get a chance. The forum has decided to convene a general body meeting to lodge a protest in the matter.
On the other hand, some doctors have also come out in support of the decision. These doctors say that people over the age of 75 are working in politics. In such a situation, if the doctor is healthy, he or she can also work till the age of 70.
System To Be Implemented After Govt's Approval
In the meantime, doctors who want to take VRS at the age of 62 will also be given the facility to retire. The state medical education minister Suresh Khanna says doctors often open their clinics or serve in a big hospital after retirement. It is better that they continue to serve the government.
The Medical Education Minister said that the first and second waves of corona had seen a lot of problems due to a shortage of doctors. We need doctors and their experience. Hence, such a proposal has been made. He said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given his consent to the proposal and it will be tabled in the cabinet soon.
The system will be implemented as soon as it is approved by the cabinet. In 2018, the government had proposed to increase the retirement age of doctors by 5 years to 70 years, but for some reason, it could not be introduced in the cabinet.
