Babri Masjid Demolition Anniversary: Section 144 Imposed In Mathura

After 29 years of demolition, the Krishna Janmabhumi and the adjoining Shahi Idgah are facing a similar dispute as to that of the Ram Janmabhumi-Babri Masjid. 

New Delhi: December 6 marks the 29th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya which sparked communal tension and riots across the country in 1992.

After 29 years of demolition, the Krishna Janmabhumi and the adjoining Shahi Idgah are facing a similar dispute as to that of the Ram Janmabhumi-Babri Masjid. 

On the occasion of the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary, security has been tightened in Mathura to avoid any untoward incident.

Four different Hindu right-wing groups had given different calls for December 6. The groups included the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, Srikrishna Janmabhumi Nirman Nyas, Narayani Sena, and the Srikrishna Mukti Dal. One of the groups threatened to install a Lord Krishna idol in its “actual birthplace” that it claims to be inside the mosque. 

“Even though the call was withdrawn last week by the group which planned it, police are not taking any chances,” SSP Gaurav Grover told PTI informing about the anti-riots drill conducted by the police on Saturday to ensure their preparedness.

Mathura Under 'Siege' 

Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed in Mathura and the checking at the entry points has been intensified, SP city Martand Prakash Singh told PTI.

The city has been divided into two super zones, four zones, and eight sectors with senior officers in charge of each zone/sector. Para-military forces were also deployed at different sites on Sunday.

Apart from this, traffic restrictions are also in place till December 7, and no vehicles are allowed near the temple or the mosque area, SP traffic Harendra Kumar told PTI.

Babri Masjid holds an important place in Indian history as the mosque and the dispute over its land had been a cause of communal tensions for decades even after it was illegally demolished by the right-wing groups on December 6, 1992.

After years of dispute over the land between the Hindu and Muslim groups, Karsevaks (Hindu right-wing volunteers) had demolished the mosque in 1992 which ignited communal riots across the country. 

The land dispute suit was concluded in 2019 with the SC giving the land to the Hindu groups. Now, the Ram temple is being constructed in Ayodhya. However, the demolition case is still going on even after 29 years.
