New Delhi: In the wake of gangster-turned politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed being shot dead in Prayagraj on Saturday, Uttar Pradesh DGP Raj Kumar Vishwakarma has warned strict action will be taken against those who spread rumours and put up provocative posts on social media.


Meanwhile, UP DGP Raj Kumar Vishwakarma, Principal Secretary Sanjay Prasad, and Special DG (crime) Prashant Kumar have boarded a special flight to Prayagraj. The three will lead the inquiry into the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother.






In view of the incident, heavy police forces have been deployed around the Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress and BSP headquarters in Uttar Pradesh. According to ABP Ganga sources, police have also put several leaders of opposition parties under house arrest who had questioned the police encounter of Atiq Amhed's son Asad.


The heavy police deployment around the opposition party headquarters is intended to prevent any untoward incidents and to maintain law and order in the state.

It is to be noted that Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azeem alias Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college in UP’s Prayagraj for a check-up.


Atiq Ahmed was charged in the 2005 murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal, as well as the murder of Umesh Pal in February of this year.


Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government has imposed Section 144 across the entire state. This means that gatherings of more than four people are prohibited, and additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order.
