A woman Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was assaulted by protesters while attempting to disperse a road blockade near Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. Video footage of the incident, which shows protesters pulling the hair of DSP Gayatri, has surfaced, prompting widespread condemnation. In response, police have arrested four individuals involved in the attack and are conducting further investigations.
The incident occurred during a protest in Aruppukkottai, Virudhunagar district, where demonstrators gathered to demand the immediate arrest of the culprits responsible for the murder of a local truck driver, Kalikumar. The driver, a resident of Perumal Devan Patti in Ramanathapuram district, was attacked by a gang of four men wielding scythes while he was driving a cargo vehicle near the Kethanayakkanpatti junction on the Thiruchuli-Rameswaram road, according to a report on ABP Nadu. Kalikumar succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. The gang also escaped from the spot.
Following his death, Kalikumar's relatives and supporters gathered at Aruppukkottai Government Hospital, demanding justice. The situation escalated when they attempted to block the Aruppukkottai-Thiruchuli road, as per the report. DSP Gayatri, who was leading a team of officers to control the protest, faced a violent assault as the protesters grabbed her hair and attacked her.

The altercation led to a scuffle between the police and the demonstrators, creating a tense atmosphere in the area. Despite their efforts, the police were unable to disperse the large crowd, resulting in traffic disruptions along the Thiruchuli road. The situation remains volatile, with protesters continuing to sit in defiance of police orders.
Meanwhile, a woman cop was chased and assaulted by her enstraged husband in June 2024. The woman constable who came under attack was identified as Dillirani of Vishnu Kanchi police station.
