The Odisha government on Sunday declared summer vacations in all schools in the state from April 25, in view of prevailing heatwave conditions in the state. The state government announcement will be applicable for all the schools, including those run by government, government-aided and private, in Odisha.

The government also announced that the schools will run from 6.30 am to 10.30 am from April 22 to 24 due to high temperature.

The announcement comes amid a searing heatwave gripping parts of India this week, with maximum temperatures ranging from 40 degrees Celsius to 46 degrees Celsius in many areas on Sunday.

Earlier, Odisha had ordered the closure of all schools in the state for three days from April 18 to 20 after a severe heatwave situation during which the temperature rose to above 45 degrees Celsius in the state.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heatwave to severe heatwave conditions prevailed in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal during the day. This ongoing heatwave affecting parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal is the second heatwave spell this month.

Baripada and Boudh in Odisha recorded a maximum temperature of 45.2 degrees Celsius, Midnapore and Bankura in West Bengal recorded 44.5 degrees Celsius and 44.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
