A 19-year-old youth from Mumbai died after eating chicken shawarma from a roadside stall in Trombay on Tuesday. Trombay Police said they have arrested two vendors, Anand Kamble and Ahmed Sheikh, regarding the incident.
A case has been registered against the two accused, who ran the chicken shawarma shop, for using spoiled chicken that led to the death of the victim.
The deceased youth, identified as Prathamesh Bhokse, bought the chicken shawarma on May 3. The victim had stomach ache and vomiting on the next day.
After the vomiting couldn’t stop, Prathamesh was admitted to a nearby municipal hospital and was given treatment. After he recovered, he was discharged from the hospital.
However, he still couldn’t consume the food for the entire day on Sunday (May 5), due to unease. Later in the day, he suffered from diarrhea and had to be taken to the KEM Hospital Parel for treatment and was later discharged.
The symptoms kicked back again on Monday morning accompanied by weakness. The boy was admitted again at KEM. However, he died during the treatment on Tuesday.
As per DCP Rajput, a case was registered against the two accused after the hospital authorities reported the matter to the police. As per the officials, an FIR was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 273 (sale of noxious food or drink) against unidentified people.
Subsequently, Anand Kamble and Ahmed Sheikh, the accused vendors were booked under various IPC sections, including 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), the official said.
There has been a spike in food poisoning cases in the recent past. Earlierly, in April, 12 people were hospitalized after consuming chicken shawarma. The victim had consumed the chicken shawarma from a roadside vendor in Goregaon.
Moreover, the recent cases have alerted the officials concerned and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has already started crackdown on illegal food stalls in the area.
