Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday drove a tractor on Juhu Beach as he participated in a cleanliness drive. Chief Minister Shinde's participation in the cleanliness drive highlights the commitment of the state government towards environmental efforts. This event hosted at the financial capital of India aims to promote awareness and action towards maintaining the cleanliness of public spaces.
After riding the tractor, the Chief Minister was seen washing the dust off a street in Mumbai.
CM Shinde started the cleanliness campaign by garlanding a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
According to India.com, the Maharashtra Chief Minister also visited the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temple near Juhu Beach where he interacted with a priest.
BMC's Cleanliness Drive
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) kicked off its city-wide deep cleaning drive in Dharavi on December 3 in the presence of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. According to Hindustan Times, the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) last week said, “While a lot of these works are done routinely, this drive will pull resources, vehicles, and manpower from all the departments in the wards. This way, the cleaning is extensive and focused. Citizens are also going to be involved, as we’re hoping this becomes a public movement. Cleanliness, after all, starts in the home with waste reduction, reduction in plastic use, waste segregation, and not littering. The Chief Minister spent five hours with BMC officials, motivating them.”
This weekend marks the second time the Chief Minister actively took part in the cleanliness drive.
According to a Hindustan Times report, the said drive will take place every Saturday throughout December and January from 9 am to 2 pm. It will take place in one ward from each of the seven zones in the city – covering all the wards.
Apart from this drive, street plays and flash mobs will also spread awareness on cleanliness.
