BJP Chief JP Nadda unveiled a commemorative postal stamp acknowledging the significant contributions of Indian-origin Tamils in building the plantation industry and other crucial infrastructure in Sri Lanka. This commemoration is particularly timely as it coincides with the 200-year milestone since the arrival of the first group of individuals from Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka, who played a pivotal role in the development of plantations in the Central province, according to Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Annamalai.
JP national president JP Nadda on Saturday released the commemorative stamp and Governor of Eastern Province of the Government of Sri Lanka Thondaman received it. The event, which took place at the BJP headquarters, is expected to strengthen the Civilisational bond between our two countries.
Before the event, Annamalai in a release highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to the welfare and development of Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka since assuming office in 2014. Annamalai emphasized that the central government, under Modi's leadership, has undertaken various initiatives, including the sanctioning of 14,000 houses and providing essential services such as healthcare, education, and cultural facilities to the Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Furthermore, Annamalai pointed out the substantial financial aid of about USD 4 billion extended to Sri Lanka as part of India's neighbor-first policy during a challenging economic crisis. Modi's perspective, according to Annamalai, views Sri Lanka as a "civilizational twin" of India, reinforcing the strong historical and cultural ties between the two nations.
Earlier, taking to X, K. Annamalai said, "Our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl has always regarded Sri Lanka as our Civilisational twin & has contributed enormously to the welfare of the Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka. It's been 200 years since the first set of people from Tamil Nadu reached Sri Lanka to work in the plantations in the Central province."
"The release of the commemorative stamp tomorrow in Delhi by @BJP4India National President Thiru @JPNadda avl and its receiving by His Excellency the Governor of Eastern Province of the Government of Sri Lanka, Thiru @S_Thondaman avl, strengthens the Civilisational bond between our two countries," he said.
