Five people died and one person was trapped after a portion of a well caved in at a village at Ranchi district in Jharkhand on Thursday. According to PTI, the incident took place in the Piska village, which is around 70 km from state's capital Ranchi.
The well caved in when nine people were trying to rescue an animal that fell into it. However, the official death toll is still unknown. Initially, it was reported that one person was killed and five were trapped in the well.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is carrying out rescue efforts.
Chief Minister Heman Soren wrote a condolence message on X (formerly Twitter) following the tragedy.

"My heart is pained by the sad news of the death of five people in a well in Piska village… May God grant peace to the departed souls, and give strength to the bereaved family members to bear this difficult hour of grief," Soren posted.
The incident occurred in the afternoon after an animal fell into the well. In an attempt to rescue the animal, nine people went inside the well. Meanwhile, a portion of the well caved in, Ranchi SP (Rural) H B Jama reportedly told PTI.
This comes just days after four people were killed in a bus accident in Giridh and 23 people were injured. The bus was on its way from Ranchi to Giridih. It plunged into the Barkar river in Jharkhand's Giridih.
