New Delhi: After breaking 45 years of ties with Congress, Himachal Pradesh Congress working president Harsh Mahajan joined BJP in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on Wednesday and claimed the opposition party has become "vision-less, directionless and leaderless", as reported by news agency PTI. Joining BJP, Harsh Mahajan said, "I was in Congress for 45yrs... today, Congress has become directionless, leaderless. There's neither a vision nor workers on grassroots."

Praising the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mahajan took a jibe at the Congress leadership saying, "it is very much ruled by "maa-beta" like in Delhi."

"After the passing away of Virbhadra Singh, there is nothing left for the Congress in the state. Congress will not win in Himachal, and the BJP will win again. PM Modi is the only leader who will take the country forward," Mahajan said, giving a glowing endorsement to the BJP government at the centre.

"I’m at the helm of affairs there. What I’ve noticed is that a section of leaders are doing sales of tickets and party posts," he added.

Mahajan's joining the BJP is being considered a major setback ahead of the assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh due later this year. Mahajan was made the working president of the Pradesh Congress Committee in May this year.

Virbhadra Singh's wife Pratibha Singh is an MP from Mandi and she is also handling the responsibility of the state president. His son Vikramaditya Singh is an MLA. Mahajan was an associate of Virbhadra Singh for a long time. He has also been the Animal Husbandry Minister of Himachal Pradesh. Mahajan's father Desh Raj Mahajan has been the Speaker of the Assembly and Cabinet Minister.

Harsh Mahajan became Congress MLA from Chamba assembly constituency for three consecutive terms.
