A Janata Dal United leader was shot dead by unidentified men in Punpun near Patna on Wednesday night when he was returning from a wedding. Kumar had come with his friends to attend a reception function and was shot by unknown miscreants while returning, said a police official.

"...Saurabh Kumar came with his friends to attend a reception function. While returning he was shot by unknown miscreants, then he was taken to hospital and one other person named Munmun Kumar also sustained injuries," said Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Masaurhi Kanhaiya Singh.

"They were taken to Kankarbagh Uma hospital, however, by then Saurabh Kumar died; we are examining the matter...," he added.

Political reactions soon ensued with the Bharatiya Janata Party saying the track record of its government in coalition with JDU in the state has been good and that action will be taken in the matter.

"The incident is saddening and condemnable, said BJP leader Nitin Nabin, adding, "There will certainly be an action."

The track record of BJP-JDU has been good. We will take action. It is not like that of Mahagathbandhan. The administration will take action. We sympathise with the family," he added.

"This was an extremely unfortunate, condemnable and sad incident. Our condolences to the bereaved family. A police team has been deployed at his house and an investigation is going on," said JDU leader Abhishek Jha.

"Whoever is behind the crime will be severely punished... The police and our government take every such incident as a challenge. Organised crime does not exist in Bihar anymore. The background story and the intent behind this will be revealed after the investigation...," Jha added.
