New Delhi: An 82-year-old bedridden woman was found cohabiting with the lifeless body of her son for a span of eight days in Agartala, news agency PTI reported, citing police.

The incident took place in the Shivnagar locality of the city, sending shockwaves throughout the neighbourhood.

Identified as Kalyani Sur Chowdhury, the elderly woman had been residing with her son, Sudhir, aged 54, after to her daughter-in-law left the house around three years back, amid familial discord.

"We conducted a forced entry into the premises under the supervision of an executive magistrate around 3 pm, and discovered the deceased individual lying on his bed," Mrinal Paul, serving as the officer-in-charge (OC) of the Maharagang Bazar police outpost told the news agency.

Given her paralysed state, the elderly woman was promptly transported to a nearby medical facility, where she received necessary care. Notably, she had been occupying a separate room within the house, Paul added.

Upon thorough inspection, numerous empty alcohol bottles were discovered in the room where the deceased was found, indicating a pattern of excessive drinking.

Our preliminary hypothesis suggests that the deceased, grappling with mental instability stemming from his marital discord, succumbed to the consequences of alcohol abuse. An investigative process has been initiated to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding this case," Paul added.
