New Delhi: An atmosphere of celebration was created across the entire nation on Sunday when the Indian men's badminton team defeated 14-time winners Indonesia to secure their first-ever Thomas Cup 2022 title in the tournament's 73-year-old history.


Meanwhile, an attempted joke by an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer on India's historic final win stirred controversy. The officer - Somesh Upadhyay took to Twitter to post an image of a mosquito racket to credit India's win in the Thomas Cup final. Twitterati was left furious seeing his tweet that caught attention for the wrong reasons.

Among several users, former Indian cricketer Amit Mishra too took notice of the tweet and condemned it. "This is not only distasteful but also insulting the achievement of our badminton heroes," wrote Mishra on Twitter via his official handle.






Ever since the Indian men's badminton team's historic win, tributes and praises have kept coming for them from all over India. 


Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with the winning team over a phone call. PM Modi also tweeted to congratulate them as he wrote, "The Indian badminton team has scripted history! The entire nation is elated by India winning the Thomas Cup! Congratulations to our accomplished team and best wishes to them for their future endeavours. This win will motivate so many upcoming sportspersons."
