New Delhi: Former India captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar believes that the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) should think about the future. In such situation, the next captain should be groomed from now itself and that's why the management should consider KL Rahul as the future captain.

BCCI should appoint KL Rahul as vice-captain: Gavaskar

Gavaskar wants BCCI to appoint stylish wicket-keeper batsman KL Rahul as the vice-captain of Indian cricket team for time being. Virat Kohli announced on Thursday announced that he'll be stepping down as India's T20I captain after the completion of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup starting next month. Meanwhile India vice-captain Rohit Sharma is most likely set to take over the captaincy duties. Rohit is currently the vice-captain in limited-overs cricket, and if he is appointed as captain, the vice-captain’s position will be vacant.

“It's a good thing that the BCCI is looking ahead. It's important to think ahead,” said Sunil Gavaskar on Sports Tak. If India are looking to groom a new captain, then KL Rahul can be looked at. He has performed well. Even now in England, his batting was very good. He has been performing well in IPL and 50-overs cricket as well at the international stage. He can be made vice-captain,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by Sports Tak.

“He has shown very impressive leadership qualities in the IPL. He hasn’t let the burden of captaincy affect his batting. His name can be taken into consideration,” Gavaskar added.
