With dark clouds looming large over the Indian Premier League (IPL) amid the coronavirus scare, which many critics consider being the only platform for Dhoni to make a comeback in international cricket, there is a big question over how can the seasoned campaigner stake a claim into the Indian team. Giving his take on this matter, Indian batting great Sunil Gavasker felt that Dhoni might not find his way back into the Indian team for the T20 World Cup and might walk away from the sport in a rather silent manner.
"I would certainly like to see Dhoni in India's World Cup squad but it's highly unlikely to happen. The team has moved on. Dhoni is not someone to make big announcements so I reckon he would silently retire from the game," Gavaskar told Dainik Jagran.
Earlier Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri had said Dhoni might retire from the 50-over format and he had already retired from Test cricket mid-way through India's Test series against Australia in 2014-15.
In the wake of the COVID19 threat, Chennai and other IPL teams cancelled their net sessions till further notice, robbing Dhoni of much required game time after a long while. In that context, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar said Dhoni might not make it to India's squad for the T20 World Cup and that the Jharkhand man might even walk away silently.
With KL Rahul excelling with both the willow in his hand and the gloves behind the stumps and Rishabh Pant seen as the frontline choice to don the gloves in the future, Dhoni's chances of making an international comeback look rather bleak.
