New Delhi: Sanjeev Chawla, who was allegedly involved in a match-fixing racket that was busted by Delhi Police in 2000 and was extradited to India yesterday, has challenged the custodial remand given by Delhi court, at Delhi High Court. Chawla, through his counsel, has challenged the custodial remand on the grounds that it was against the extradition treaty signed between the United Kingdom and India.

Patiala House Court's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sudhir Kumar Sirohi had sent the accused bookie in police custody after he was extradited from London on Thursday.

The cricketing world and the sports community at large was shaken up around two decades back at the turn of the new millennium when one of the biggest match-fixing scandals erupted and left a denting image on the Gentleman's Game and tarnished the reputation of some of the most admirable cricketers from both India and South Africa, including the highly revered South African skipper Hansie Cronje.

Delhi Police on Wednesday made a major breakthrough as they got custody of Sanjeev Chawla, key accused in the 2000 spot-fixing case involving late South African captain Hansie Cronje and several former cricket stars, after completing legal formalities for his extradition from a UK court, flew to Delhi with the now 50-year-old bookie.
