Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen registered a dramatic win in the dry/wet race at the Circuit de Monaco on Sunday (May 28). While Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso finished second, Alpine's Esteban Ocon came third to finish the set of podium finishes.
In a thrilling race affected by a sudden rain shower, Max Verstappen emerged as the victor in the Monaco Grand Prix. Despite the challenging wet conditions, the top three drivers who started at the front of the grid maintained their positions until the checkered flag.
Fernando Alonso's strategic decision to switch to slick tires, followed by an immediate switch to intermediates, gave him a significant advantage over Esteban Ocon. This allowed Alonso to secure second place, holding off his former teammate in a fierce battle.
Verstappen, equipped with medium tires, capitalized on his strong start, surpassing Alonso who swiftly moved to defend against Ocon. Both Alonso and Ocon were on medium tires, while the Aston Martin of Verstappen opted for the more durable hard compound. Carlos Sainz successfully fended off Lewis Hamilton's advances to maintain fourth place, followed closely by Charles Leclerc.
Overall, it was an exhilarating race at Monaco, with Verstappen showcasing his skill and determination in adverse weather conditions, while Alonso's strategic gamble paid off, securing him a well-deserved podium finish.
Meanwhile, the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell continued to remain outside of a podium finish. While Hamilton finished fourth, Russell finished fifth. As far as the Driver of the day is concerned, Alpine's Esteban Ocon won the honour who finished third on Sunday.
"We thought to play a long game with our strategy, but Max drove really well on the medium tyres over that first stint," Alonso told Sky Sports after the race.
