Olympique De Marseille progressed to the finals of the Europa League with a 3-2 aggregate win over Austrian opponents RB Salzburg.
The Austrian giants were trailing 2-0 from the first leg held at Marseille and it looked like the score was going to stay the same.
The second half saw a very different outlook altogether. First Marseille came up with some decent attacks but failed to finish them off. After that, it was all Salzburg.
Salzburg broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute with an amazing solo goal from Amadou Haidara and equalized the aggregate in the 65th minute through an own goal from Bouna Sarr.
The game after that looked well in balance and to extra time.The next thirty minutes of play saw some substitutions as defender Rolando replaced the midfielder Sanson in the 101st minute.
Both the teams looked to attack with Salzburg looking more threatening. They forced two incredible saves from the French club's goalie Yohann Pele.
In the 115th minute, Marseille were awarded a controversial corner as Zambo Anguissa's shot deflected off his teammate Lucas Ocampos and went out of play.
The decision should have been a goal kick but instead, the referee awarded the team with a corner. Dmitri Payet, who in the match had found no success in creating chances through set-piece situations was taking the corner.
Payet whipped an outstanding cross, which landed on the substitute Rolando's foot as the Portuguese guided it home to make the aggregate 3-2.
The Salzburg players were utterly disappointed with the decision and rightly so, the goal broke their hearts. Some players even protested and paid the price as one of them Dabbur was booked.
The goal left Salzburg needing two goals to qualify but given the time it seemed impossible. The frustration within the players was visible as Haidara hit Payet in the 119th minute to get his 2nd booking of the match and was sent-off.
Not only the players were frustrated but the manager also was gutted and as the game finally ended Salzburg's manager Marco Rose confronted the referee.
Albeit a controversial decision, the French giants will now face the Roji Blancos in Lyon on May 16th.
