New Delhi: Manish Kaushik on Wednesday became the 9th Indian boxer to qualify for 2020 Tokyo Olympics after defeating his Australian opponent Harrison Garside in the box off bout at the Asian Olympics Qualifiers being held in Amman, Jordan. Manish who fights in the light weight category (63 kg) and secured a place in the Olympics .
After losing his quarter final bout in the 63-kg welter weight category, the Indian pugilist managed to secure a spot in the Tokyo Olympics courtesy his win the box off bout.
With Manish's entry into the main draw , India would be represented by a record 9 boxers at the Tokyo 2020 later in the year. The ninth Olympic berth in boxing is India's all time best show as far as Olympics qualification in the contact sport goes. Earlier in 2012 London Olympic Games 8 boxers had qualified for the main draw .
Seasoned Indian boxers and multiple medalists at international events like Mary Kom , Amit Phangal,Vikas Krishan and Pooja Rani were among 4 others who had already secured a ticket for Tokyo.
