INDIA (2nd innings)
SESSION 3...
India will look to bat around till Tea tomorrow. Let's see how the Kiwis fight back from this position now. Should be another exciting day of Test cricket so do join us back at 0930 IST to catch the day 4 action. Until then, goodbye and take care. Cheers.
Superb day for India! They have seen off the tricky little period but have suffered a blow. Gautam Gambhir injured his shoulder and went off the field, retired hurt. They're on top though in this match as they lead by 276 runs. Earlier in the day, they bundled out the Kiwis just under 300 with Ravichandran Ashwin being the destroyer-in-chief as the offie grabbed a 6-fer.
STUMPS: India 18/0. Murali Vijay 11 not out, Cheteshwar Pujara 1 not out.
2.5 overs: On the stumps, Gambhir plays this one behind square leg for a couple. The single was taken easily but they had to rush for the second. Gambhir had to dive for the second to get into his crease and he seems to have hurt his right shoulder again. Gautam Gambhir is getting some medical attention. Gambhir had hurt himself already during the field and now he is walking off the field. That's unfortunate. Gautam Gambhir retired hurt 6 (7b 1x4 0x6).
It was a tough morning session for India but after that, Ashwin found his rhythm and just ran through the batting order. He finished with 6 wickets to his name, his 20th 5-wicket haul in just 39 Tests. Superb effort. The pacers were not that effective in this Test but it did not actually matter much.
To be honest, it was not a bad batting display by the Kiwis. The openers did well but then the middle order fell apart. Then they had a partnership in the lower middle order but once that was broken, another collapse happened. Guptill, Latham and Neesham were impressive but that century is still eluding them. More importantly, their skipper Kane Williamson has not been able to strike the right chord.
So it took India 22.2 overs after Tea to dismantle New Zealand. They needed 4 wickets and got them pretty quickly, even though they conceded some runs. Santner was dismissed half an hour after Tea and then a procession ensued. Eventually, the visitors fell one short of 300, conceding a massive lead of 258.
Murali Vijay is running to the dressing room while the others are slowly walking back. Don't see India enforcing follow-on with that attitude. In fact, THE HOSTS WILL BAT AGAIN.
NEW ZEALAND (1st innings)
90.2 overs: WICKET! Floated on off, Boult comes down the track to have a go at it but ends up getting a top edge. Pujara runs back from mid-wicket and pouches the catch. That's six for Ashwin. It has been a superb performance from him and India today. Trent Boult c Pujara b Ashwin 0 (5b 0x4 0x6). NEW ZEALAND ALL OUT FOR 299!
88.2 overs: WICKET! That's another one for Ashwin! Floated on the stumps, Henry mistimes his drive back to the bowler who spills the chance. He though deflects it onto the stumps and they go up in an appeal. Guptill was run out in similar fashion. Third umpire referred and replays show that Patel is short of the crease. That's another moment of fortune for India.
Jeetan Patel run out 18 (26b 3x4 0x6).
86.2 overs: WICKET! Five wickets for Ashwin! Tossed up delivery on off, Neesham looks to sweep this one but misses and is hit on the pads. The Indians go up in an appeal and the umpire gives it out. The replays show that the impact was outside off. Neesham watches it once in dressing room and does not like it one bit but the damage it done. Jimmy Neesham lbw b Ashwin 71 (115b 11x4 0x6).
85 overs: New Zealand 269/7. Neesham 71 (114b 11x4 0x6), Patel 8 (13b 1x4 0x6), Ashwin 25-5-69-4, Shami 12-1-39-0.
80 overs: New Zealand 254/7. Jeetan Patel 0 (2), Jimmy Neesham 59 (95).
78.6 overs: WICKET! Jadeja gets the breakthrough! Fullish ball outside off, Santner goes for the drive but gets an inside edge. The ball goes straight into the hands of Kohli at leg slip. Pretty good reflexes that in spite of Kohli being blinded. Jadeja gets his second wicket and New Zealand slip further, still trail by 304 runs. Mitchell Santner c Kohli b Jadeja 22 (52b 4x4 0x6).
We are back for the final session! 31 overs are left in the day. Jadeja to continue, Neesham to face...
New Zealand now trail by 341 runs with just 4 wickets in hand. They may not be able to save the follow-on but doubt whether Kohli will enforce it as he might want to give some rest to his bowlers. The second new ball is due in 12 overs' time, so India will look to wrap up the tail as quickly as possible. Join us at 1430 IST (0900 GMT) for the final session.
Neesham and Watling stitched a counter-attacking half century stand but the latter was dismissed just before Tea. Neesham is looking good out there, mixing caution with aggression, albeit he has been lucky on a couple of occasions as well.
India came out firing after Lunch. Mainly, Ravichandran Ashwin who picked up 4 wickets and demolished the Kiwi middle order. The ball to dismiss Kane Williamson was a beauty and Ashwin also played a role in running out Guptill who was playing beautifully.
SESSION 2...
TEA: New Zealand 216/6. Good run rate maintained by New Zealand but look at the wickets lost. Again, they have missed to capitalize the initiative and have their backs to the wall.
62.6 overs: WICKET! Jadeja strikes! Floated on off, Watling is beaten by the turn, the outside edge goes off Saha's gloves into the hands of Ajinkya Rahane at first slip. The ball actually popped out but Rahane did well to hold it. End of a fine stand for New Zealand. A timely wicket for India, just close to the Tea break. BJ Watling c Rahane b Jadeja 23 (48b 4x4 0x6).
60 overs: New Zealand 189/5. Jimmy Neesham 24 (41), Bradley Watling 15 (36).
DRINKS BREAK: What an hour for India! They've picked up four wickets in no time. New Zealand need a breather here as they've lost half their side already.
50 overs: New Zealand 154/5. Jimmy Neesham 4 (12), Bradley Watling 2 (5).
48.1 overs: WICKET! New Zealand have lost their fifth wicket. Terrific catch by Rahane! Another one bites the dust! Flighted ball outside off, Ronchi tries to defend but gets a faint edge on this occasion. The ball brushes the keeper's pad and goes to the right of Rahane at first slip. The Indian vice-captain shows quick reflexes and does really well to catch it. Ashwin gets another wicket and Ronchi is gone for a duck. New Zealand have lost half their side now and they still trail by 407 runs. Luke Ronchi c Rahane b Ashwin 0 (6b 0x4 0x6).
46.6 overs: WICKET! Guptill is run out! Can you find any more unfortunate way to get out? Poor Martin Guptill, after batting so well he's been run out at the non-striker's end. Martin Guptill run out 72 (144b 10x4 2x6).
45 overs: New Zealand 140/3. Luke Ronchi 0 (1), Martin Guptill 64 (136).
44.5 overs: WICKET! EDGED AND GONE! That's beautiful bowling by Ravichandran Ashwin! Nicely flighted outside off, goes straight on, Taylor tries to defend it but gets an outside edge which goes towards Rahane at first slip. Easy catch there for Jinx and Taylor bags another duck on this tour. New Zealand in trouble now. Ross Taylor c Rahane b Ashwin 0 (4b 0x4 0x6).
42.6 overs: WICKET! Tad short outside off, turning in, Williamson goes onto his back foot to play it to the off side but gets an inside edge onto his stumps. That's a big, big wicket for India as the Kiwi skipper departs. That's three in three innings for Ashwin, he has taken his wicket every time in this series. That turn did him in. Kane Williamson b Ashwin 8 (25b 1x4 0x6).
India will look to come back harder in the afternoon session and should find a plan to take wickets on a pitch which is still good to bat on. Join us back in a bit for the second session then to catch the action.
Martin Guptill is still batting out there and he's looking good. He was under pressure and he couldn't find a better time to score runs. There's a lot of work to be done though for the Kiwis. They are still trailing by 432 runs and would be looking for a similar session ahead.
SESSION 1...
LUNCH: Pretty good session for New Zealand, that! Scored 97 runs for the loss of one wicket in 30 overs. They added 118 runs for the opening wicket after the openers struck fifties. Guptill and Latham survived some scares initially as Rahane put down one catch and then Jadeja failed to take a tough chance. Latham was out after his fifty when Ashwin got the breakthrough for India eventually.
39 overs: New Zealand 125 for 1 at Lunch on Day 3. Train India by 432. Martin Guptill 59 not out, Kane Williamson 3 not out, Ravichandran Ashwin 1/42.
34.2 overs: WICKET! Caught and bowled! Ashwin has broken through! So the turned down catch appeal has not cost India at all. Just one run added after that and it should not matter much. Good loop from the experienced off spinner, slows the pace a touch, Latham looks to flick but is a slight early into the same. As a result, he gets a leading edge which lobs back to the bowler who calmly takes it. No doubt this time. Latham walks. End of a very good opening stand. Now the big question - Will the floodgates open up? 240 MORE NEEDED TO AVOID THE FOLLOW-ON. Tom Latham c & b Ashwin 53 (104b 7x4 0x6).
30 overs: New Zealand 106/0. Martin Guptill 55 (93), Tom Latham 45 (87).
20 overs: New Zealand 55/0. Tom Latham 18 (63), Martin Guptill 32 (57).
The players are out in the middle. The Indian players pose for the team photograph. MARTIN GUPTILL and TOM LATHAM stride out. There's an Indian team huddle. UMESH YADAV to bowl first up.
PITCH REPORT - Sunil Gavaskar reckons it's still a good pitch to bat on. There are some cracks and it's a hard surface. If the batsmen apply themselves then they can score runs.
Hello everyone to the coverage of day 3 of the third Test between India and New Zealand in Indore. The hosts are firmly in control in this Test as well after a mammoth first innings total. New Zealand played out the tricky little period towards the end as they didn't lose a single wicket. It's going to be a big day for the visitors here as they are trailing by 529 runs. Should be an exciting day of Test cricket.
RECAP
India continued their domination over New zealand as brilliant batting from skipper Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane helped the hosts to a mammoth 557/5 on the second day of the third and final Test match at the Holkar Cricket Stadium here on Sunday.
Rohit Sharma (51 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja (17 not out) forged a 53-run partnership before Kohli decided to declare the innings midway through the final session of the day. Sharma bought up his half century off 62 balls, with three fours and two sixes.
At the close of play, New Zealand were on 28/0 and trailed India by 529 runs. Martin Guptill (17 batting) and Tom Latham (6 batting) were at the crease.
Resuming the second day at 267/3, Kohli and Rahane helped India reach 358/3 at lunch.
Kohli continued to bat in the post-lunch session with the same authority, maintaining a high scoring rate and slammed his second double-ton in Tests.
At 199, Kiwi pacer Henry delivered a length ball and Kohli rolled his wrists nicely to work it towards deep square and became the first Indian to score two double tons as captain.
Rahane, on the other hand, was not so fluent, but supported his skipper from the other end. The Mumbai batsman scored his first 150 of his career.
Resuming the post-tea session at 456/3, Kohli and Rahane again paced up their innings as they hit the Kiwi bowlers all around the park before off-spinner Jeetan Patel broke their 365-run partnership by trapping Kohli leg-before for 211.
Kohli's 366-ball innings was laced with 20 boundaries.
Soon after he added 39 runs to the overall score with incoming batsman Rohit Sharma, Rahane too was sent back to the pavilion for a well made 188 runs when he hit out at a widish delivery from pacer Trent Boult only to see New Zealand wicketkeeper Bradley-John Watling pull off a simple catch.
Rahane's 381-ball knock was laced with 18 boundaries and four sixes.
