Mumbai Indians’ (MI) poor form continued as they faced their second consecutive defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The Hardik Pandya-led MI lost to Gujarat Titans (GT) by 36 runs on March 29 in Ahmedabad. While MI were no match to GT’s efforts in batting and bowling, it was actually Mumbai’s fielding that was embarrassingly subpar on multiple occasions. So much so, that it had the legendary Sunil Gavaskar fuming during commentary.
Mumbai Indians faced an embarrassing moment after a costly fielding error handed Gujarat Titans five extra runs in the first innings of the GT vs MI IPL 2025 match. The incident occurred when Sai Sudharsan pulled a short ball from Deepak Chahar toward deep square, appearing to take a routine single.
A casual jog from the batter and a sharp throw from Naman Dhir created a run-out opportunity at the non-striker’s end. However, Dhir’s throw missed the stumps and with no backup in place, the ball raced to the boundary. What should have been a simple single turned into five costly runs, leaving MI’s fielders visibly frustrated.
'Absolutely Terrible Cricket': Sunil Gavaskar
Commentating for Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar was left fuming over the misfield, calling it " terrible cricket."
"Terrible, that is absolutely terrible cricket. The fielder at deep fine leg, if he thought he is such a wonderful fielder, that he is gonna knock the stumps at the other end, then he has a thing coming. No wonder Deepak Chahar is not happy, it (the five runs) goes against his name!” Gavaskar said.
Coming to the match, Gujarat Titans posted a strong 196, driven by Sai Sudharsan's 63, with Shubman Gill (38) and Jos Buttler (39) making valuable contributions. Hardik Pandya took two wickets for MI, while Shubman became the second-fastest batter to score 1000 IPL runs at a venue. In the chase, Rohit Sharma's poor form continued as he fell cheaply to Mohammed Siraj, while Suryakumar Yadav's 48 off 28 balls showed promise but wasn’t enough to see MI through.
