This move marks the end of Russell's decade-long association with KKR, which began in 2014. Renowned for his explosive batting and game-changing performances, Russell struggled to make an impact in the 2025 season, prompting the franchise to make this surprising call despite his legendary contributions over the years.

Russell’s release is not right, says Kaif

Andre Russell, 37, who retired from international T20Is earlier this year, contributed over 11 years to Kolkata Knight Riders, amassing 2,600 runs and claiming 122 wickets for the franchise.

His explosive performances were central to KKR’s success. However, former India batsman Mohammed Kaif believes the dynamics shifted with Abhishek Nayar’s appointment as head coach, suggesting that Nayar’s desire to shape the team in his vision was the key reason behind Russell’s release.

“Russell’s release is not right. You had him at 12 crore and that is not a big amount really for a player like him. He is once in a generation player. Yes he was out of form but later on he scored runs too. But as coaches change, they bring some changes. I think this was a big call.

“You can say he was not at his peak but I feel this is such a format, specially in the IPL, where experienced players do well and there are many examples. I feel the straight answer to his release is Abhishek Nayar. He wants to make his own team now. But this was an astonishing call,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
