England captain Joe Root's prolific run-scoring helped his team go past the 550-run mark in the first innings and put a mammoth total on board at stumps against India On Day 2 of the Indian vs England 1st Test in Chennai. England added 100 runs after losing 4 wickets in the last session. With this, by the end of the second day's play, the visitors scored 555 runs for 8 wickets.

At the end of the day's play, Jack Leach and Dom Sibley remain unbeaten on 6 and 28 runs respectively. Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shahbaz Nadeem and Ishant Sharma took two wickets each from India.
England saw a 200-run partnership for the third wicket, 124-run partnership for the fourth wicket and a 86-run solid stand for the 5th wicket. England skipper Joe Root scored 218 runs in the first innings before getting dismissed. Root's double century has put England in complete control of the Chennai Test.
England added 99 runs after losing one wicket between lunch and Tea break. Root and Stokes shared a 124-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Stokes scored 82 runs with the help of 10 fours and three sixes but was unlucky to miss out on a well-deserved century. He lost his wicket in an attempt to play slog sweep off Shahbaz Nadeem.
The 23-year-old young batsman Oli Pope arrived at the crease after Stokes was dismissed. He played an innings of 34 runs and added 86 runs for the fifth wicket with captain Joe Root before getting dismissed by Ashwin. After Pope's dismissal, Root also did not last long at the crease and was cleaned up by Shahbaz Nadeem.
For India, spinners R Ashwin and Nadeem picked wickets in quick succession to remove Ollie Pope (34) and Joe Root (218) in the last session. Inshant Sharma was finally rewarded for his efforts as he bowled Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler off successive balls.
