18-year-old Indian chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa on Monday defeated world No.3, the highly-rated American Grand Master Fabiano Caruana 3.5-2.5 in a nerve-wracking tie-break in the semifinals and will now square off against world's number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway at the FIDE World Cup chess tournament. Praggnanandhaa is only the second Indian chess player after Viswanathan Anand to reach the World Cup semifinals.


In the FIDE World Chess Cup final on Tuesday (August 22), the young Indian grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa will aim to continue his dream run against five-times World Chess Cup champion Magnus Carlsen, who qualified for the summit clash with a comfortable win over Nijat Abasov of Azerbaijan in his semifinal.


Praggnanandhaa joined all-time great Bobby Fischer and legendary Magnus Carlsen in an elite list as the18-year-old Indian is now the third youngest to qualify for the Candidates tournament. Players who finish in top three positions in FIDE World Chess Cup will qualify for 2023 Candidates event to determine who gets to challenge reigning world champion Liren of China.

"I didn't expect to play Magnus in this tournament at all because the only way I could play him was in the final, and I didn't expect to be in the final. I will just try to give my best and see how it goes!," Praggnanandhaa said after winning his semi-final match.
