Coming back after a couple of failures with the bat, Mahendra Singh Dhoni grabbed all the limelight in the first ODI against Australia on Saturday in Hyderabad. His unbeaten 59-run knock played a crucial role in India’s 6-wicket victory. Dhoni innings consisted six boundaries and just one six which rephrased an Indian batting record.

The lone six in Dhoni’s 72-ball long innings was his 216th for India in the ODIs. With this maximum, the former captain surpassed Rohit Sharma in terms of hitting most sixes in this format for India. Prior to this match, Dhoni and Rohit Sharma were both tied with 215 sixes but Dhoni overtook the latter.

Dhoni achieved this feat in the 38th over off Nathan Coulter-Nile’s delivery. His strong bottom-hand grip sent the ball directly into the crowd, altering the record books.

Dhoni now leads the list of most sixes for India in ODIs, leaving behind some of the legendary cricketers with the likes Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag.

Dhoni also went past Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya after registering the 353rd six of his career. Before his six in the first ODI, Dhoni and Jayasuriya were tied at the fourth spot in the list of most sixes in international cricket.
