India's renowned domestic 50-over cricket tournament, the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023, commenced on November 23 and will culminate on December 16. Organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), this year's tournament witnesses the participation of 38 teams competing in a total of 135 matches.

These 38 teams, representing various states, are grouped as follows:

Group A: Saurashtra, Kerala, Mumbai, Railways, Tripura, Pondicherry, Odisha, and Sikkim.

Group B: Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Hyderabad, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Services, Meghalaya, and Manipur.

Group C: Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Mizoram.

Group D: Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Group E: Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Bengal, Baroda, Goa, and Nagaland.

The tournament follows a round-robin format where each team plays against others in their group once. The top teams from each group and the best-performing runner-up advance to the Quarter-finals, while the remaining runner-up teams compete in preliminary quarter-finals for the final two Quarter-final spots.

Named after the legendary cricketer Vijay Hazare, the tournament's inaugural season occurred in 2002-03, with Tamil Nadu securing the championship. While the teams represent their states, the tournament serves as a pathway for players to potentially represent India. Key players like Mayank Agarwal, Ajinkya Rahane, and Sanju Samson are among those participating this year.

Matches for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023 group stage are held across five venues - Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad. The knockout matches, including the final, will be hosted in Rajkot.

Saurashtra currently holds the title of reigning champions after securing a five-wicket victory against Maharashtra in the 2022 edition.
