Talented youngster Prithiv Shaw, who has not appeared in the national cricket team jersey since July 2021, made an ordinary start to his maiden stint in the English county circuit. The 23-year-old, recently ignored by selectors for India tour of Windies and the Asian Games 2023 after a forgettable outing in this year's Indian Premier League (IPL), made his debut for Northamptonshire in Royal London One Day Cup on Friday, which for him sadly ended in bizarre fashion.
A video surfaced on social media in which Shaw can be seen falling while playing a shot en route to his 34-run knock against Gloucestershire in the group-B tie. Chasing 279 for the win, Northamptonshire were off to a horrible start as they lost their first five wickets for just 30 runs in the 10th over. Shaw, along with skipper Lewis McManus tried to steady their team's sinking ship but the hard-fought 24-run partnership ended with the out-of-favor Indian batter getting dismissed in a bizarre fashion.
In the last ball of the 16th over, Prithvi Shaw (34) tried playing a hook shot off Gloucestershire bowler Paul van Meekeren's short-pitched delivery, but he somehow lost balance and fell awkwardly on the ground, kicking his stumps on the way down. Two of the Gloucestershire players then helped him stand up. The video of the incident has been shared by the official Twitter handle of the tournament on official X (formerly known as Twitter).
Ahead of his debut for Northamptonshire in Royal London One Day Cup, Shaw was confident that his debut in the English county circuit would be amazing.
"It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m really thankful to Northamptonshire for giving me this chance to express myself here," Shaw said as the statement read. "It’s going to be amazing I think and I’m really looking forward to it."
