Match Summary
New Delhi: Jason Roy smashed an unbeaten 91 as Delhi Daredevils defeated hosts Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in a last-ball thriller in the Indian Premier League here today.
Opener Roy made a mockery of a listless Mumbai Indians bowling attack as he hammered six fours and as many sixes in his 53 ball knock to help Delhi overhaul the home team's 194/7 for their first win of the season.
It was the third successive loss for MI and they remain without a point after three matches.
With 11 needed in the final over, Englishman Roy hammered Mustifizur Rahman for four and a six, before playing out three dot balls. Delhi needed one-run off the final ball and Roy connected it and completed the run to ensure that his side won, with Shreyas Iyer (27 not out) at the other end.
Roy and skipper Gautam Gambhir conjured up a 50-run stand for the first wicket. Roy made his intentions clear hitting a four off Hardik Pandya. He then smashed a towering six and a four off Akila Dhananjaya as Delhi raced to 23/0 in two overs.
Hardik Pandya conceded 21 runs in his second over as Roy hammered him for two consecutive sixes over long on and square-leg respectively and followed it with a four.
But Gambhir (15), failed to convert his start, as he gave a sitter to Rohit Sharma off Rahman.
Leggie Mayank Markanade was taken to task by Roy and one down Rishabh Pant (47 off 25 balls), who also played his role to perfection.
Pant did not spare Dhananjaya, hitting him for two sixes and a four as Delhi grabbed 19 runs of the 10th over. But Kieron Pollard brought MI back into the game with a stunning diving catch at long-off as Pant went back to the pavilion with the visitors at 119/2. Glenn Maxwell's (13) stay at the crease was cut short with Hardik taking a stunning catch.
Iyer and Roy ensured that there was no further damage and finally took their side home.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians batting finally clicked with Suryakumar Yadav leading the way with a whirlwind fifty as the defending champions posted a formidable score.
After being put to bat, the strategy of opening the inning with Yadav, instead of captain Rohit Sharma, and Evin Lewis worked wonderfully well, as they gave MI a flying start with a 102-run-stand.
After Yadav (53 off 32 balls) and Lewis (48 off 28 balls) posted the century stand, their good work was continued by Ishan Kishan (44 off 23 balls). But the latter order batsmen failed to sustain the tempo and the total fell well below what the openers had promised.
Yadav and Lewis made their intentions clear by smashing a four each in the first over off Trent Boult. They brutally punished Boult as 15 runs came in his second over, with Yadav hitting two fours and Lewis striking his first six. Yadav then welcomed Mohammed Shami with a six and followed it with two fours as he made a mockery of the listless Delhi attack.
MI raced to 84/0 after the powerplay, their highest score in IPL history in the first six overs. But soon after that, Rahul Tewatia applied the brakes and send Lewis back, who was caught by Jason Roy at mid-off. Lewis smashed four fours and as many sixes.
Tewatia then trapped Surya in front of the wicket as Mumbai lost two quick wickets. Surya, who hit seven fours and a six, unsuccessfully reviewed the decision.
But Mumbai lost Rohit (18), Krunal Pandya (11) and Hardik Pandya (2) in quick succession, as Delhi bowlers made a strong comeback in middle and death overs.

Krunal leaks 12 runs in 16th over
How much will the expensive sixteenth over from Krunal cost Mumbai Indians? The left-arm spinner has leaked 12 crucial runs in the over. With strategic timeout in play, last over will definitely help Delhi with the momentum. DD need another 35 runs from 24 balls
Terrific CATCH from Hardik!
After Pollard, Hardik Pandya has pulled off a ripper at long-off to get rid of dangerous Maxwell. Running over 20 metres and then a full-length dive on his left, Pandya Junior has taken the best catch of the IPL so far. Maxwell walks back for 13 off 6 balls. DD need another 58 runs from 36 balls
Pant walks backs!
Terrific knock from Pant could only be halted by a superb effort. West Indian Kieron Pollard has pulled off a blinder. Diving catch at long-off has provided a much needed breakthrough to MI. Pant walks back after scoring 47 off 25 balls. DD require another 76 runs from 48 balls
Pant and Roy take on Mumbai spinners
Halfway through Delhi Daredevils have scored 104 for the loss of one wicket. Batting from the visitors has just been brilliant till now. Though, Roy (49* off 26 balls) was blessed with a lifeline in the eighth over after third umpire overturned a bump ball OUT decision by the on-field umpire but Rishabh Pant (40* off 18 balls) has looked in terrific touch clobbering the ball all around the park. Pant has smashed spinners with ease. DD require another 91 runs from 60 balls
Powerplay done, Gambhir walks back cheaply
With a daunting task in front, Delhi Daredevils’s Jason Roy has blasted the ball all-around the park in the powerplay overs. Though Delhi lost Gambhir in the sixth over but apart from that it has been a terrific start for the Daredevils. Roy (37* off 18 balls) has clobbered the ball with brute force and stage has now been set for a brilliant run-chase. DD are 53/1 after 6 overs.
Mumbai Indians batting summary
The decision to send Suryakumar Yadav to open the batting worked perfectly for Rohit Sharma and Co. as Yadav’s blitzkrieg of 53 off 32 balls helped MI post their highest powerplay score in history of IPL. At one stage it looked that MI will score in excess of 230 but brilliant comeback by DD bowlers restricted Mumbai at 194/7 after their quota of 20 overs. Leading DD’s comeback, Dan Christian struck wickets off successive balls to bring rampant MI run-rate under control. Along with Christian, Shami and Boult too chipped in with wickets in the final overs to restrict Mumbai’s run marathon. Rohit Sharma yet again failed with the bat scoring mere 18 off 15 balls faced. Pollard, Hardik and Krunal too disappointed with the bat getting out cheaply in the final overs. For Delhi, Boult, Tewatia and Christian bagged 2 wickets each wihile Mohammed Shami clinched one wicket.
Rohit Sharma walks back
Trying to up the run-rate in the last 3 overs, Rohit Sharma miss times the shot off Trent Boult. Jason Roy pouches a simple catch at long-off. Disheartened Sharma walks back after scoring 18 off 15 balls. MI are 183-5 after 18 overs.
Back-to-back wickets for DD
Delhi Daredevils are right back in the match. Wickets of successive balls have somewhat pulled MI’s blitz. After scoring 44 off 23 balls Ishan Kishan is OUT trying a silly shot. Trying to clear the in-field with a switch-hit , Kishan completely misses the full-toss off Dan Christian. The very next ball all-rounder Kieron Pollard is back to the pavilion missing a simple good length delivery from Christian. Sixteenth over produces 2 wickets for DD. MI are 167-4 after 16 overs.
Will Rohit take Mumbai past 200?
At the end of 15 overs Mumbai Indians have posted 158 for the loss of two wickets. Stage is perfectly set for swashbuckling Rohit Sharma (13 off 10 balls) and Ishan Kishan (36 off 19 balls) to take Mumbai’s score over 200 for the first time this IPL season. Delhi bowling performance has been absolutely POOR today. Will Rohit and Co. fire in the last 5 overs or will the Delhi bowling attack make a comeback? WATCH OUT!
BIG BLOW to MI, Yadav walks back.
Trying to sweep a flipper off Rahul Tewatia, Yadav misses the ball completely. The review shows the ball just kissing the leg stump of the batsman. Though the review has been retained by MI but Yadav has to go as the original decision was given OUT. Brilliant 32-ball 53 knock from Yadav comes to an end. Rohit Sharma finally arrives at number 4. MI are 111-2 after 11 overs.
Lewis OUT, Yadav slams 50, MI are 100 up in no time!
Evin Lewis is OUT after his blitz of 48 off 28 balls but Mumbai Indians will still be eying at a big total here at Wankhede Stadium today. They have managed a brilliant start with both openers taking past MI to 100 in just 8.3 overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma's decision to send Suryakumar at the top has paid off. Post Lewis's dismissal, Yadav has reached his fifty off just 29 balls. MI are 107-1 after 10 overs
Powerplay done, Mumbai on TOP!
Terrific shot selection, brilliant timing and poor bowling by Delhi bowlers have been the highlights of the powerplay overs. MI have slammed their highest score ever in powerplay overs. Lewis is on 37 off 16 balls while Suryakumar (41 of 20 balls) has been clobbering the ball at a strike rate of over 200. MI are on 84 without any loss after 6 overs.
50 up for MI!
Yadav and Lewis have decided to go after the Delhi bowling attack. MI have gone past 50 in no time. Both are dealing in boundaries and sixes at this time. Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir is shell-shocked. MI are 52-0 after 4 overs.
Suryakumar Yadav is on FIRE!
Blue army is on rampage here at Wankhade Stadium, Mumbai. After 3 overs MI are cruising at 40 without loss. With 21 off 10 balls including four boundaries, Suryakumar Yadav has justified his promotion while Lewis is batting on 13 off 7 balls.
BIG Change

PREVIEW
Winless title-holders Mumbai Indians and an equally sluggish Delhi Daredevils will be eager to notch up their first points when they clash in the Indian Premier League at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.
While Mumbai went down to Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad by identical one-wicket margins in edge-of-the-seat thrillers, Gautam Gambhir-led Delhi succumbed to Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals in their first two games.
Mumbai's batting line-up which boasts of attacking players like skipper Rohit Sharma, West Indians Elvin Lewis, Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav has failed to fire in unison in the first two games.
The hosts would especially hope for an end to the dismal run of skipper Rohit, who fell cheaply in both the games after a largely forgettable tour of South Africa and some modest run in the tri-series in Sri Lanka prior to the commencement of the T20 League.
Rohit's form is crucial for Mumbai and with Lewis too not coming good, the opening partnership has been struggling to get going.
Mumbai could look at promoting Krunal Pandya up the order if his injured brother Hardik, who did not play in the game against Sunrisers last night, again misses tomorrow's match.
On the plus side for MI, Yadav has been among runs and his role will be a key element for the team, especially if the team loses early wickets. In both the games MI lacked big partnerships.
Among the bowlers, rookie leg-spinner Mayank Markande has been brilliant in the two games. His seven wickets, including the four scalps that he captured in a low-scoring tie against Sunrisers at Hyderabad last night, earned him the purple cap.
The Punjab-born wrist spinner has been relying mostly on googlies as his wicket-taking balls and his performance would be key to Mumbai's success.
Markande, however, has lacked adequate support from the other bowlers Muztifizur Rehman, Jasprit Bumrah, Pradeep Sangwan and Krunal.
Muztifizur and Bumrah are some of the best death bowlers in the world, but they went for runs and would be keen to do better tomorrow.
Delhi, on the other hand, also possess top batsmen but they too haven't been able to perform to their potential till now. Expectations will be high from local boy Shreyas Iyer, apart from captain Gambhir, Rishabh Pant, Aussie Glenn Maxwell, Englishman Jason Roy and Kiwi Colin Munro.
If they get going they can dismantle any bowling attack and Mumbai's won't be an exception. The visitors could also bring in some newcomers in place of laggards.
Delhi bowlers, who have leaked runs aplenty, will also need to step up and strike regular blows to contain Mumbai's strong batting line-up. The role of spinners, especially leggie Amit Mishra, will be crucial.
The dew factor may not play a significant role as it's an evening game.
